The Open-Topped Carriages are passenger coaches with no roofs.

History[]

Television Series[]

The first open-topped carriage is the oldest railway coach on the Fat Controller's Railway. When Sir Topham Hatt was young, Edward always took him aboard this old coach on his birthday. However, the open-topped carriage somehow went missing, but Winston and Thomas found the old carriage in an overgrown siding and took it to the Sodor Steamworks for restoration. Once restored, Edward brought it to Knapford as a birthday surprise for the Fat Controller. (TVS; Happy Birthday Sir!)

Ulfstead Castle also owns at least two four-wheeled open-topped carriages, which are used to bring tourists to the estate as well as take visitors around the rest of Sodor. They are also known as Stephen's Coaches.

Technical Details[]

Basis[]

The Open-Topped Carriages are based on a Liverpool & Manchester Railway four-wheeled open-topped carriage from the 1830s. Two replicas of the carriages have been produced by the National Railway Museum, and are used by the Stephenson's Rocket replica.

Livery[]

The Open-Topped Carriages are painted turquoise, with a brown interior, gray buffers and white wheels. When Sir Topham Hatt's open-topped carriage had been found, its paint had faded by the time.

Modifications[]

Throughout the seventeenth season and King of the Railway, the open-topped carriage inconsistently changed in size.
