Glynn is a small vertical-boilered tank engine, who used to work on the North Western Railway as the line's original No. 1.
Biography
Television Series
Glynn was built sometime between 1905 and 1908 by Sir Topham Hatt, along with the other "Coffee Pot" tank engines, and he used to work on the Ffarquhar Branch Line. He was later withdrawn from service, and he was placed in a siding by Ffarquhar to rust away. He was eventually replaced by Thomas, who was given the Ffarquhar Branch Line, and he met him when Thomas made his first visit to Ffarquhar. Glynn told Thomas to take good care of the branch line and to wear his number with pride, watching Thomas leave the station. (TVS; The Adventure Begins)
Glynn was later restored, and had a race with Stephen.
Personality and Traits
Not much is known about Glynn's personality, but he seemed to be a very old and wise engine, and congratulated his replacement, Thomas, after he was given the branch line and told him to look after the line well.
Technical Details
Basis
Glynn is based on the Head Wrightson 0-4-0VBGT "Coffee Pot" No.1, which was built in 1871 for the Dorking Greystone Lime Company. This engine worked at the company until 1952, when it was withdrawn from service and left to rust. The engine has since been restored and now works at the Beamish Museum, where it is currently used for shunting trucks for demonstration purposes.
Livery
Glynn's livery is relatively similar to that of his basis. He is painted red all over, and his funnel and the top of his boiler are painted grey. The top of his funnel and his controls are gold, and he carries his name on gold nameplates, placed on each side of his water tank along with his number. His buffers are painted black. As Glynn had been left on a siding for a long time, his paintwork was covered in rust, and ivy was growing over his body.
Trivia
- Glynn was included in The Adventure Begins by railway consultant Sam Wilkinson, thus making the "Coffee Pot" engines canon to the television series.
