Alfred was a small narrow gauge tank engines that used to work in the mines on the Mid Sodor Railway. He was not featured in any stories, but was featured on the Rev. W. Awdry's layout of the railway.
A second engine working at the mines named Atlas was an identical engine to Alfred. It is unknown what happened to them after the Mid Sodor Railway closed.
Atlas and Alfred are both based on the Joeuf Decauville 0-4-0PT, with the cab roof removed and with shorter funnels.
Alfred was both painted brown with brass domes, the top and front of his tanks was painted black, and his bufferbeams were painted red.
- Originally, two mine engines were featured on Awdry's original Mid Sodor layout. However, only one was seen on his second layout.
